This Social Media Exchange Helps Explain How DEI Gets Into Public Classrooms

I recently came across this post on social media and stopped. I agreed with the notion and started to look down through the comments to see what was being said about it.

Quickly, I came across this comment:

This comment made me feel the need to respond because of the use of her language, “bringing students into the conversation”, “using diverse methods”, “approaching students” – all which are progressive education buzzphrases – so I responded:

She replied:

I continued, hoping that she would understand what I was trying to say. She wasn’t ugly, she was – probably like me – trying to reach a point of understanding between us.

I wish I hadn’t been so terse in my response, but it’s somewhat shocking – even now – to see someone who so clearly wants to be helpful and so clearly believes she is doing the right thing, when in fact nearly her entire outlook is based on a completely flawed premise – that somehow teachers can overcome family and other outside influences (Tik Tok anyone?) by treating their students differently based on a concept that doesn’t exist in reality (equity). She responded one last time:

As did I:

Looking back on this conversation reminds me of one of the reasons I quit teaching; I saw these ideals bubbling up through continuing education courses and I knew I was never going to be able to assimilate them into my classroom. I couldn’t.

I have ALWAYS believed in the power of the INDIVIDUAL to succeed – or fail – depending upon how much effort that INDIVIDUAL put in. Now, is every kid primed to take up the gauntlet of self-individuation and put their head down with a plan? No. Too many other factors – especially a bad home environment – can put a chip on the shoulder of a kid that may never come off. That doesn’t mean that teachers in public school classrooms are to deal with that chip – even if a kid isn’t learning. Teachers can only do what they can do WHILE INSTRUCTING KIDS IN THE NECESSARY TOOLS OF LEARNING; reading, writing and math.

The particular theory this young teacher espouses asserts that teachers should become the parents of the children – because, obviously, the parents are not doing their jobs if kids are coming to school scared and weak and timid. Sadly, it’s true for many children today. Many parents use school as a babysitter and could care less what their kids are doing in a day to actually recieve an education, but that doesn’t mean it’s THE JOB OF THE TEACHER TO RECTIFY THE POOR UPBRINGING OF THEIR STUDENTS. In fact, most of the time, it’s either a psychologist, or the school of hard knocks that changes students with downward trajectories – if they do – some, sadly, go to prison or wind up dead. Still and all, the lifetrack of a child is not the responsibility of the teacher. The education of that student is – alone – the job of the teacher.

Teachers are not to become the parents of poorly-performing students, they are to work harder to bring parents into the equation (or remove the child from school if the child is disrupting others and the parents won’t help control the child) to help the child, not take on the troubles of the child themselves. In fact, it’s this kind of progressive ‘theology’ that leads to classrooms where feelings and psychological concepts take center stage, NOT INSTRUCTION IN READING, WRITING and MATH. I believe it’s easy to see how wrong-headed this model of ‘education’ is and how it’s RUINING children just by looking at Oklahoma’s test scores. And if you don’t believe me, check out this video for an enormous wake-up call.

Far Left American Library Association Urges EVERYONE To Report “Threats To The Freedom To Read” While Defending 10 Most Challenged Books

Today I opened the American Libraries Association (ALA) “State Of American Libraries Report” to find that not only is the ALA rabidly defending sexually explicit texts, ALA President Patty Wong reminds readers that, “ALA’s Office for Intellectual Freedom encourages everyone to report any and all challenges to materials, online resources (including databases), programs, speakers, displays, reading lists, and author visits. No matter is too insignificant.”

Ms. Wong also posits that, “As book challengers try to ban materials they believe tell an unflattering version of our country’s history, they are restricting us from books that support equity, diversity, and inclusion.”

Interesting take.

Here are the 10 most challenged  books from 2021 compiled from 729 challenges to over 1000 books – up from 156 in 2020 in graphic form as found in the annual report.

Here is a graphic compiled by the Office for Intellectual Freedom regarding the reasons why the 10 books were challenged.

What is the LARGEST reason for reporting a book challenge?  The books were found to be SEXUALLY EXPLICIT.

Here are a few photos from the book Gender Queer:

To get the real flavor of Toni Morrison’s “The Bluest Eye”, watch former state senator Josh Brecheen read a portion of the book on the floor of the Senate during the vote for the bill that repealed the Common Core State Standards from Oklahoma law in 2014 at minute mark 8:28.  Poor Josh had to spell most of the passage and was even embarrassed to do that!  That’s how sexually explicit The Bluest Eye is.

Now let’s not forget, Ms. Wong told us that book ‘banners’ are “restricting us from books that support equity, diversity, and inclusion”.  So how is that Ms. Wong?  Does equity = sexually explicit material?  What about diversity?  Does diversity = sexually explicit material?  Wait, inclusion must.  Inclusion must = sexually explicit material!  Obviously, Ms. Wong is framing her horror about book challenges completely out of context.  Odd for a librarian who should understand context, huh?  So maybe it’s less about context and more about foisting an agenda of sexually explicit literature on our kids.

In an interesting note; ahead of the 10 most challenged book list, the ALA put out a press release to name the books and include a survey, commissioned by the ALA, to show that ‘Voters Oppose Book Bans‘ and have a “near-universal high regard for librarians and recognition of the important role that local public libraries and school libraries play in communities.”

A former published scientist, I love to laugh at ‘surveys’, because results fully depend upon 3 factors:  1. what population was polled for the survey (where in the country do they live, etc.)  2. the number of people polled for the survey (the larger the sample size the more predictive of the community as a whole)  and 3. how the survey questions are asked (was pertinent information included or were the questions missing information).

The library survey included only 1000 people called ‘voters’, and 472 parents of children in public school, all who were a mix of Democrats, Republicans, Independents.  Importantly – we’re not told if the sample was an EQUAL mix of each category, or where in the country the survey was taken.  In addition, none of the questions asked about banning books contained the words “SEXUALLY EXPLICIT” just “objectionable” and “upsetting”.  Unsurprisingly, most anyone then should consider this survey at best a fun exercise and at worst disingenuous to its core.

Parents, it’s high time you understood that the ALA and most libraries are COMPLETELY LEFT in their ideology and not at all interested in supporting a Christian notion of family.

Apparently they’re interested instead in a notion of inclusivity, diversity and inclusion that all seems to add up to the force-feeding of sexually explicit literature into our children through school and public libraries.

Cultural Competency, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion – Is Racist Training

What would you think if an administrator said the following to you:

“We have to have ‘Cultural Competency’ training. Here’s an example of why…LatinX students are helpers – that’s who they are. They help each other with everything. That’s just their culture. There have been teachers who’ve come to me and felt that they were cheating and I’ve had to explain to them that, “no, they’re not cheating, that’s just the Latin X culture.”

I recounted this story to an Hispanic acquaintance recently. She was shocked. Not only did she not like the ‘LatinX’ term, but she was greatly troubled by the fact that someone would label ANY student the way this administrator did – particularly an entire group of individuals – giving every INDIVIDUAL in the group the same attributes.

How does that not 100% satisfy the definition of racism?

Here are the reasons I believe DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) and training in ‘Cultural Competence’ are simply wrong:

1. America is to be a MELTING POT of cultures. You may be Italian, but when you become a citizen of the US, you are no longer ‘Italian’ (or even ‘Italian American’), you are an AMERICAN who recognizes the US Constitution as sovereign and America’s common traditions and history as your own. While you retain your Italian heritage, share stories and foods of your culture with your friends and community – you don’t come to America expecting it to become Italy, you come to be an ‘American’ with all the rights and duties that affords and confers.

2. America – more so than in any other country in the world – recognizes INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS. It’s baked into our First Amendment. It’s an attribute given us by God who said, “Even the hairs on your head are all counted. Don’t be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows.” (Luke 12:7). To explain individuals by a set of cultural ‘attributes’ flies in the face of God himself, let alone the Constitution of the United States. (Aside: now wonder… why do Leftists/Socialists/Communists want to teach American children to hate America?)

3. Dividing people into groups promotes racism – the practice of believing “that each race has distinct and intrinsic attributes” – and what this administrator said under the guise of preventing racism IS 100% RACIST by definition.

My husband has friends from India who came to America to work. Because they were afraid they would be deported under the Trump administration (a LIE OF THE LEFT) they moved to Canada.

Once, when my husband asked his friend how they were doing in that country, the man said that he had expected Canada would be like the US – that his family would be living among other cultures and sharing the fruits of their rich cultural backgrounds with others, learning from one another.

He was surprised instead to find that, where he lived in Canada, cultures we’re completely separated so that, instead of living with and learning from others of other nationalities, he was confined to living with only those from India.

He was very sorry they had left the US and looked forward to the time when they could return. He hadn’t wanted to leave India only to surround himself with other Indians, he told my husband.

America, America, God shed His grace on thee, and crown thy good WITH BROTHERHOOD from sea to shining sea….
